2 Tips to make you look smarter

Say you're in a meeting and then all of a sudden someone asks you, “Hey, Raj, could you tell me the details about the defect?” And then you're caught by surprise and you don't know how to react."

How many of you have been in this situation before?

I for one, have been in this situation multiple times and the gut reaction is to respond immediately and say something, whatever comes into your mind.

Follow this two-step approach to make you look smarter and buy some time so that you can think with clarity and then reply to the question.

First thing you could do: Follow the "I'll get back to you" strategy. - Say, for example, they ask you a question saying, Hey, do you have more information about this product? Instead of saying something immediately, you will say, “You know what? I don't remember right now, but let me get back to you after the meeting.”

The second thing you could do: Ask clarifying questions. - Say someone asks you, “Hey, could you give us more information about this issue that is happening?” What you could say is, to take a breath and then ask clarifying questions to buy some time. You can ask. “So what issue are you specifically asking about the production issue or the non-production issue? And then when they're giving you clarification, you buy yourself some time to think and then you can reply succinctly to the question as well.

So remember, I'll get back to your strategy and clarifying questions and that will make you look smarter. And you can buy some time to give re succinctly, and with clarity and increase your credibility.
