How to explain the gap in your resume

The pandemic has been hard on most of us, and a majority of the people (mostly women) took a break to take care of the family or people got laid off.

Now finally, the job market is picking up and you're are starting to apply for jobs. During the interview, they ask you to explain the gap in your resume and you don’t know how to respond!

This is one common question you are gonna get, especially right now in the post covid era.

Here are five ways to successfully answer it

  1. The first thing you could say is, “I took a mental break because covid is hard on everyone.” And you could say, I took a mental break to focus on myself and my family. My family needed me, so there's a gap in my resume.

  2. The second thing you can talk about it, just say, “I had to take a personal leave of absence” that’s it. You don't have to say anything else. The employer cannot ask you further questions because it's a personal matter.

  3. The third thing you could say is, “I took this time to retool my skill sets and take a lot of courses and certifications,” and you could add those certifications and things you took and you learned on your LinkedIn profiles so that it's proof that you took those courses as well.

  4. The fourth thing you could say is you just had bonding time with your family because times were hard, and this was a time you took off to get closer to your family and take care of them.

  5. The fifth way to answer that question could be, “I tried a side hustle and I learned a lot.” from that experience and then list different things you learned and that's what you did between one job and to your current job you're interviewing for.

So those are five ways you can successfully answer that question. Explain your gap in your resume.
