Answering "What are your salary expectations?"
“What are your salary expectations?”
That's a common question you're gonna get in an interview and here's how you approach it.
It's a two-step approach:
When they ask you the question, you may say something like “my salary expectations would depend on the base salary, the stock options, the perks, my responsibilities.” But despite that, if they force you to say, “Hey, I need to know your salary because I have to talk to my hiring manager.”
What you would say is, “okay, I understand that.” Then you're gonna give your salary in ranges. And you can research the salary range from websites like Glassdoor, Indeed, and other websites as well. But the point is that based on the job position you're applying for, you can find the salary ranges for your job.
When they say, “can you tell me a salary despite telling them that we could talk later,” you would say, “okay, I expect between 120 to 150k,” always tell your salary expectations and ranges. In that way, you give a lot of bandwidth in terms of what they can offer you.
So those are two things you always, always want to keep in mind when you get this question.
