How Do You Answer Difficult Questions During Interviews?

Especially questions you don't know the answers to.

  1. Ask them to repeat the question. You could say something like, "Could you repeat the question for me, please."

Because that is going to buy you some time to think through what they are asking.

  2. Make assumptions and let them know what assumptions you're making. For example, say you have a question - "how many traffic lights are there in the United States or some random abstract questions like that?"

You would say, "Okay, I'm going to assume that you're talking about the United States, I'm going to assume that each state has this mini population and keep going..."

    So explicitly state your assumptions.

  3. Walk them through your thinking process strategically. Say something like, "Okay, the first thing I'm going to do is going to Google trying to figure out what the population is in the United States.

“The second thing I'm going to do is...”

“The third thing I could do is..."

This shows that you're thinking through with clarity.
